Welcome to The 27th International Ornithological Congress
Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
August 19-26, 2018
Vancouver is proud to welcome you, preeminent avian researchers and conservationists from around the Globe, to the International Ornithologists’ Union’s prestigious 27th International Ornithological Congress (IOCongress2018). The Host, the IOCongress2018 Organizing Society, and Co-hosts, Bird Studies Canada and the Society of Canadian Ornithologists, have been planning for your coming since 2013.
To make the Celebration even more complete, the public will be joining us through the first Vancouver International Bird Festival – in a World Celebration of BIRDS in all their dimensions: from your Science to the Arts, photography, travel, film, opera, ancient bird coins, poetry, bikes, business… and, of course, “birding”. To conjure such unprecedented magic, the organizers have aligned with Artists for Conservation, City of Vancouver, Pacific WildLife Foundation, British Columbia Field Ornithologists, Vancouver Nature and other key partners to create an exciting week long array of daily bird-related events open to you and the public in and around our spectacular venue, the Vancouver Convention Centre (West Building).▼
Notable highlights include the Opening Parade led by youth in bird costumes on stilts, a Vancouver Symphony Orchestra Brass Fanfare, the launch of a new series of Canada Post “Birds of Canada” stamps, the unveiling of the Artists for Conservation’s giant “Silent Skies Mural”, a 3-day Bird Expo with over 70 exhibitors and presentations by the internationally renowned “Birds Know No Boundaries” team, Purnima Barman, winner of the “Green Oscars”, and Jennifer Ackerman on the “Intelligence of Birds”. Also, as Birds are truly the Gateway to Nature, the public have been invited to participate in our many bird trips on the “Big Day”, Friday 24 August.
Finally, please join us and our most honored guest, distinguished author, poet, novelist, literary critic, essayist, inventor and teacher, Margaret Atwood, for Canada Evening on Tuesday 21 August.
We are indebted to Tourism Vancouver, Simon Fraser University, Environment and Climate Change Canada and the Government of British Columbia for their support from the outset in making this a memorable scientific gathering - and salute MCI Canada, our Professional Conference Organizer, for realizing the vision.
