BIRD STUDIES CANADA & SOCIETY OF CANADIAN ORNITHOLOGISTS STUDENT AWARD

AVAILABLE FOR CANADIAN STUDENTS OR POST-DOC FELLOWS

Students travelling to and presenting at IOCongress2018 in Vancouver can now apply for travel awards to help offset the cost of travel.

Please read the application instructions carefully and complete the travel award application. Applications are due April 1st, 2018.

ELIGIBILITY:

  • Applicants must be either a student (undergraduate or graduate) or postdoctoral fellow registered at, or affiliated with, a Canadian University.
  • Applicants must be a member of the Society of Canadian Ornithologists or Bird Studies Canada, or both.
  • The work being presented does not need to have field work conducted in Canada, but work that involves Canadian bird species will be given preference. This would include work involving wintering populations in Latin America.
  • Applicants travelling from greater distances will be eligible for differential funding – those travelling from Atlantic Provinces and Latin America are eligible for awards up to $500, those from central Canada or the central U.S. for up to $400, and those from western Canada/ western US up to $300. Note that total funding may be lower as it is based on the number of applicants, but it will be pro-rated on these principles.

 

HOW TO APPLY:

  • Applicants must submit through email:
    • A completed application form
    • The abstract submitted for the Congress; and
    • The confirmation email(s) from the Congress indicating both receipt of the abstract and registration for the congress.
  • All material must be submitted to ken.otter@unbc.ca by April 1, 2018 for consideration. Applications received after this date will be considered only if funding is available.
  • Recipients of travel awards will be expected to acknowledge funding from Bird Studies Canada and the Society of Canadian Ornithologists in presentations/on posters

 

Selection and Announcement Process:

  • Notification of funding will be made by 30 May 2018.
  • Attendance and presenting at the IOC are mandatory to receive funding.
  • Cheques will be issued to the applicant prior to the congress, recipients will be required to sign in at the SCO-SOC booth at the congress to confirm attendance, or will be expected to forfeit and return all funds.
