Early Morning bird watching - NOW FULL 

Get your day started at sunrise with the birds! Join our local volunteer bird-watching leader for a walk along Coal Harbour towards Stanley Park/ Lost Lagoon. Your group leader will bring a scope to scan over Vancouver Harbour for seabirds and spot any distant birds and then you’ll walk along the seawall and parks as we make our way to Stanley Park and Lost Lagoon. Alternating short- and long-walks take place on Tuesday August 21, Wednesday 22, Thursday 23 and Saturday 25.

Coal Harbour Short Route

We'll start the Congress with a shorter route to help you get familiar with Vancouver and walk along the Coal Harbour sea wall and parks to view birds in the marine habitat. Time permitting, we’ll make our way to Devonian Harbour Park at Coal Harbour before returning to the hotel.

Lost Lagoon Long Route

On these days, we’ll pick up the walking pace, so we have time to inspect Lost Lagoon lake. We may start the walk along Coal Harbour for a quick view over Vancouver Harbour. Then we’ll aim for the City’s beautiful Lost Lagoon lake to view the wetland edge, gardens and park habitats before returning to the hotel.

Birding Ability and Physical Fitness Level

All birding abilities welcome. Walks will have almost no elevational change and will be at a standard pace. The length and route may vary daily depending on bird activity and weather, with stops along the way to view birds. Participants should be comfortable walking 3 to 5km to participate.

What to Bring and Expect

Come prepared with comfortable walking shoes and clothing that suit the early morning (at sunrise) weather, binoculars, bird book if you have one (not needed). Your guide will bring a birdwatching scope. We also recommend bringing a water bottle as there may not be access to drinking water along the routes and a snack if needed.

All walks begin at 6:15am and return to the hotel by 8am.
